Alright, everyone knows what beeswax is.

I’m sure you know what it is.

You know what it is because we all learned about it in second grade and then told our elementary school crushes things were none of their beeswax out on the playground because we were too young to know how to communicate our feelings or that it was actually cool to like someone.

But obviously, that’s not why we’re here.

Instead, we’re picking up where your teacher left off. Because while we were learning super important things about how bees pollinate flowers and whatever else, no one ever told us why beeswax is the most popular ingredient in lip balms and why we should care.

And, you probably know some of this stuff, but I’d bet you don’t know all of it so let’s learn about the benefits of beeswax for your lips.

Here's what beeswax does for your lips.

Beeswax is a natural substance produced by bees that forms a protective layer on the surface of your lips that locks in moisture. These barrier-forming properties help protect and nourish your lips to stay smooth, healthy, and hydrated. Beeswax is also known for its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which can help to soothe dry, cracked lips and help prevent them from becoming chapped.

So, while beeswax is a powerful ingredient on its own, it's what binds all of our other ingredients, like shea butter and coconut oil, together and helps our lip balm hold its shape in varying temperatures.

Does beeswax make your lips dry?

You might come across some people claiming beeswax dries out their lips.

But is that really true?

Well, it depends on who you ask, but we know beeswax is a natural moisturizer that helps protect skin from the elements. So, at the very least, it's blocking environmental stressors while helping your lips retain any hydration they already had. And it does this while still allowing your skin to breathe and not clog your pores.

So, do we believe beeswax dries your people's lips? No, we don't. But that's just us.

If you find a beeswax lip balm is drying out your lips, check to see if there are any flavors or fragrances in it that could also be bothering you. Ingredients like eucalyptus or peppermint are known to be skin irritants and are more likely the reason for any sort of dry skin.

Is beeswax safe for my lips?

Natural beeswax is full of Vitamin A, which helps promote skin regeneration and acts as a natural exfoliant. It's also an anti-bacterial, which can help heal damaged skin. And its anti-inflammatory properties help soothe skin conditions like dermatitis or eczema, or generally for those with sensitive skin that gets irritated easily.

Where does beeswax come from?

Beeswax is the natural substance bees create to form their honeycombs.

Beeswax is the natural wax created by worker bees to make honeycombs. The honeycomb is a structure of hexagonal cylinders that are then filled with honey from honey bees and capped off with another layer of beeswax. The wax helps protect honey bee hives from the elements. Beeswax is then harvested by removing the beeswax caps from the honeycomb with a hot knife.

Beeswax is an anti-inflammatory and is used to help treat people with sensitive skin.

Then once harvested, these three types of beeswax can be found in beauty products — Yellow, White, and Absolute.

Yellow beeswax is the raw beeswax that comes straight out of the honeycomb. White beeswax is yellow beeswax that has been purified to filter out any impurities. And Beeswax Absolute is beeswax that's been treated with alcohol.

So, knowing we want to create a consistent experience for everyone using our products, we use white cosmetic-grade beeswax in everything we make. And, even though white beeswax is purified, it retains all of its natural benefits.
